Welcome to the Study on Human vs. AI Guidance in Programming

Please read the information below carefully before starting. The study takes approximately 60 minutes and must be completed on a laptop or PC (not a phone or tablet).

How it works

After clicking Start, you will be taken to a browser-based coding environment (VS Code). A terminal will open automatically with step-by-step instructions, please follow them carefully.

At the beginning you will fill out a survey and afterwards complete two short coding tasks. During each task, you will be connected to either a Teaching Assistant or an AI Bot to help you. You will be informed which one at the start of each task, make sure to ask at least 5 questions per task. Since this study is conducted across multiple institutions, several teaching assistants based in different countries (including India, Austria, Germany, and Australia) are available to support participants throughout the day.

Bonus points (Relevant for TU Graz students only): You will receive 2 bonus points only if you ask at least 5 questions and submit both coding tasks.
